Great Sphinx of Giza
A royal human head joined to the powerful body of a lion.
Carved from the limestone bedrock at Giza, the Great Sphinx is conventionally associated with the reign of Khafre. In the New Kingdom, it was worshipped as Horemakhet—Horus in the Horizon. That later identity should be distinguished from its original Old Kingdom context.
Why this matters
The monument links the lion, the king, and later solar worship. Its connection to the constellation Leo remains a modern hypothesis.
